BATLEY’S CLOTH MILLS WEAVE A BRIGHT FUTUREThis is a case study by CMG Member "PRomotion" The imposing Victorian cloth mills, undergoing an extensive renovation in the heart of the Yorkshire’s former textile epicentre, have seen the light! The mills on Bar Street in Batley form part of an exciting £9 million residential redevelopment by NBE Holdings Ltd of the town centre. Eight buildings in all will be transformed into affordable apartments and business units, attracting more people into the town and creating jobs, but it’s the mills on Bar Street that are already drawing in the plaudits with windows on the world supplied by Wakefield-based specialist supplier Forest Ltd. Forest Managing Director Tom McEvoy took up the story: “We are seeing increasingly complex and demanding specs for doors and windows within listed properties such as this and we therefore have to respond as an industry with innovative and sympathetic solutions. “Local planning regulations required the windows and doors to be of wooden manufacture and in keeping with the style and construction of the original property and we were happy to oblige with highly bespoke products. “The fascia of these refurbished mills retains the traditions of Victoriana with a number of modern developments thrown in for good measure,” explained Tom. The mills replaced the existing damaged windows and frames with a total of 63 vertical sliding sash models as well as two high quality, high performance 68mm thick over rebated doors. The frames were constructed using finger-jointed laminated engineered timber technology that was fully finished and glazed to meet the architect’s exacting specification and featured a counter balance spiral balancing mechanism Tom went on: “There is the initial spec which had the hallmarks of a truly unique job as well as the range of required sizes which varied from 1.1m wide x 1.6 high to 1.4 w x 2.3 h with Victorian bar configuration applied to argon filled double glazing units. “These sort of complicated briefs for listed properties are becoming an increasingly large part of our activity at Forest and we are seeing a growth in demand as the need for restoration within old properties increases,” he added. Plamen Ivanoff of NBE Holdings commented: “The key requirement of local authority and a prime objective of ours is to ensure that the premises are converted without destroying the aesthetics and heritage of the original build. “We are delighted with the end result of this link and it helps to have a supplier that can deliver a range of products promptly and within budget,” added Plamen A total of 12 apartments will be the net result of this eye-catching project with each set to hit the market at around £90,000 on what is widely acclaimed to be Batley’s Golden Mile. NBE, based nearby at Gomersal, is playing a pivotal role in the regeneration of this richly historic West Yorkshire town. Forest, in turn, are contributing by casting light on a bright future.
