GLASS IN A CLASS OF ITS OWNThis is a case study by CMG Member "PRomotion" A school’s needs are forever changing with an ever demanding burden of health and safety combined with security often becoming prime objectives. St Mary’s Catholic High School in Astley near Leigh in Greater Manchester is one that has put care and thought into achieving its objectives with the knowledge and support of Wakefield-based specialist window and door supplier Forest Ltd. The school’s dining room area has recently undergone a significant upgrade with Forest providing glazing solutions that complied with a demanding brief. Forest MD Tom McEvoy, who has spent over three decades within the door and window industry, explained: “We were selected by architects Nightingale Associates because of our ability to supply and install bespoke solutions and this particular project drew on all of our experience. “The needs of the pupils are paramount on a job such as this with our range of safe and secure products offering peace of mind. “A number of timber casement windows were supplied that incorporated multi-purpose security hinges and integral restrictors for limited opening capacity,” added Tom. Forest were also asked to supply and install top swing openers with a remote powered opening mechanism and all of the glazing was constructed from 10mm toughened clear and obscure glass. A complex six pane panel external door was also included in the design with a 2.7m x 2.4m full window screen comprising of seven different size panes. “These sort of complex jobs are becoming increasingly the norm for Forest within both public and private sector developments,” added Tom “and this particular job represents just one of a number of educational establishments that we have worked with.” Reg Towner of Nightingale Associates commented: “The quality and security capability of glazing solutions within schools and colleges are critical and it’s therefore important to select a supplier who can provide the students with a safe window on the outside world. “Forest fulfilled our criteria effectively and the end result is a light and airy dining area that is both aesthetically pleasing and conforming to all relevant regulations,” added Reg. It’s clear that the pupils of St Mary’s will be looking out on a safer and more secure world from now on.
